There’s a bewildering array of scales, subdials, printed dial elements, and indicator windows to get the hang of. There is even a ‘Density/Altitude’ button on the enlarged 50 mm case.
So why own one? Ask Usher. Martin Brundle. Frank Lampard. Ed Sheeran. Natalie Portman. Richard Mille’s list of celebrity fans and ambassadors is as long as the string of zeroes at the end of his bank balance. People wear Richard Milles because they can. I don’t know what I’m looking at, so I’m going to have to take Richard Mille’s word for it. As all 30 of these incredible timepieces found owners quicker than you can say ‘cabin crew’, it’s reasonable to assume fans of the brand found something irresistible in the endless combination of tasks the RM039 AL TI can perform. After all, even without understanding what all the scales and calculations do, I can see that this luxury watch is something to admire and to covet. The jumbo-jet measurements of the case (it’s nearly 20 mm high) don’t necessarily make it a timepiece for the wrist, but some watches are made to be marvelled at and not worn. Bring it out of your watch safe at the right party, and you’ll spend hours calculating the air density of your dining room.
On the rotating bezel (there are two bezels on this luxury watch, one fixed and one moving), you’ll find the legend ‘FLIGHT INSTRUMENT’ printed in bright yellow. And it is this legend that really explains everything the RM039 Aviation E6-B Flyback Chronograph is about. Don’t think of it as a timepiece. Don’t even think of it as a machine with a single purpose. This is the instrument panel in a modern aircraft, sitting on your wrist. If you are Seiko fanatic, I am not sure lume even needs to be discussed. Seiko is known for amazing lume and the Stargate is no different. It is applied thick and evenly and glows insanely bright and lasts pretty much all through the night. Don’t believe me? Pick one up and check it out for yourself. You will be impressed.
My overall opinion of the Stargate is I love it. I like the styling of the case, the easy to read dial and the day and date application. If I am being honest, there are a few things I can pick on, one being the cyclops. The other would be the all high polished finish, I am more of a satin brushed kinda guy. The other would be hardlex crystal (I’m a sapphire guy). But that would also put it at a much higher price point.
